A Portugal Golden visa is the quickest way to Portugal citizenship by investment that promises a free and secure life in Europe.
This visa is given in exchange for financial investment. You can become eligible for Portuguese
citizenship in as little as five years if you apply for a Golden Visa.
Due to the presence of a Golden visa, the bearer can travel around Europe without a visa, stay in
the nation for as long as he wants, and guard his savings.
The Portuguese government has extensively marketed the investor visa program since its
inception in 2012. A family with dependent children can obtain a residency visa in Portugal by
investing €500,000 (or €250,000 for a reduced alternative) in real estate.

The Golden Visa of Portugal is a popular way to Portugal citizenship by investment because of the following reasons:
- Schengen countries offer visa-free travel to a person with a Portugal Golden visa.
- The bearer of a residence permit of Portugal is not required to live in the nation permanently after he obtains it. In the first year, he just has to live for seven days, and in the next two years, he only has to live for fourteen days.
- 5 years after getting the residence permit, the bearer can apply for citizenship by investment in Portugal.
- Second citizenship is recognized in Portugal, allowing persons to keep their primary citizenship.
- Portugal’s property prices are lower than the European average.
- Portugal is regarded as one of the world’s safest countries.
- In the Global Peace Index 2021, it is ranked fourth. The GPI rates the peacefulness of 172 independent provinces and territories (which together account for 99.7% of the world’s population).

Portugal Citizenship – Investment Options
To be eligible for a Golden Visa in Portugal and obtain Portugal citizenship by the investment you must make one of the following contributions:
- Buying a property worth at least €500,000. The minimum investment amount is €400,000 if you choose to buy in a low-density region.
- Investing €350,000 on a property in a revitalization zone in Portugal. The investment amount is €280,000. If you invest in a low-density region, the investment is €280,000. The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service – SEF – should be ready to invest in the initiative.
- Make a minimum investment of €350,000 in a qualified Investment Fund. The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) controls investment options, which typically include real estate venture funding and start-up tech companies.
- Make a capital transfer to a Portuguese bank account of at least €1 million.
- Purchase at least €1 million worth of company stock.
- Invest at least €1 million in a business in Portugal.
- Create at least ten employments for Portuguese nationals.
- Spend at least €350,000 in the development of a commercial company or the strengthening of a commercial company’s share capital, resulting in the creation of at least five full-time jobs.

From January 2022, if you invest in a high-density, metropolitan area of Portugal, such as Lisbon, Porto, Algarve, the Silver Coast, or Setubal, you will not be eligible for a Golden Visa. This is because the Portuguese government wants to promote foreign investment in the country’s low-density areas.
Other modifications that have an impact on Portugal’s Golden Visa program include:
- The amount that can be transferred from a Portuguese bank account to another will increase from €1 million to €1.5 million.
- The research capital transfer will grow from €350,000 to €500,000.
- A qualified Investment Fund’s capital transfer will increase from €350,000 to €500,000
- You must invest €500,000 instead of €350,000 to form a commercial firm or to increase the share capital of a commercial company, and you must create at least five employments (this remains the same)
There will be a transition time after the new rules take effect, allowing investors who applied and funded in 2021 to complete their investment and visa applications.
