Canada Immigration requirements post-Covid Pandemic

Current State of Canada Immigration

The pandemic has had an impact on travel all over the world and Canada is no exception. To combat the spread of the virus, Canada had imposed travel restrictions in March 2020.
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is a government body that facilitates the arrival of immigrants, provides protection to refugees, grants citizenship. IRCC continued to process permanent residence applications despite the restriction.

There were also regular Express Entry Draws which is a point-based immigration program for skilled workers. This is because Canada wished to attract highly skilled individuals.

Covid-19 Precautions after you migrate to Canada

The 14-day quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated travelers has been lifted for those who are “currently permitted to enter Canada.” As a result, the vast majority of foreign nationals continue to be denied entry into Canada. Fully vaccinated travelers will be subjected to testing and quarantining.

Travelers will still be required to have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure, and fully vaccinated travelers will be required to take a COVID-19 test upon arrival in Canada. Travelers who have been fully vaccinated must then remain in quarantine until their Day 1 test results are negative.

Only those who have received one of the COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in Canada will be eligible for the reduced quarantine measures. Currently, four COVID-19 vaccines have been approved in Canada:

  1. Pfizer-BioNTech
  2. Moderna
  3. AstraZeneca and,
  4. Johnson&Johnson

Travelers must receive their final dose at least two weeks before arriving in Canada.

Impact of Canada Immigration on businesses post-COVID-19?

Employers and small businesses in Canada will benefit greatly from re-opening the borders to new immigrants and international students in a safe manner. This will aid in meeting their labor requirements. The need for immigrants is not new Before the pandemic, Canada aimed a growing number of new immigrants each year.

  • This is due to Canada’s aging population, which is causing labor shortages. The pandemic has only increased the demand for new talent. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the majority of labor shortages are for occupations that require at least a college diploma or an apprenticeship (CFIB).
  • According to the CFIB, small businesses frequently rely on immigrants and temporary workers to succeed.

When it comes to immigrating to Canada, people with skilled work experience have many options.

According to the most recent Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-2023, Canada expects to welcome over 400,000 new permanent residents each year. Around 60% will immigrate as skilled workers.

The three main economic class immigration programs for skilled workers are

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP),
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and
  • Canadian Experience Class.

These programs are managed by Express Entry, the main application management system used by the Canadian Federal government. Those who qualify for the Express Entry system can create a profile and fill out their information.

Candidates are assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on the information provided. In regular Express Entry draws, the top-scoring candidates are invited to apply for Permanent Residence in Canada.

If you’re eligible to travel to Canada, make sure you know the rules and what you need to do before and after you arrive.
